Moodie Davitt Report

UAE. Flight operations are beginning to return to normal at Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Sharjah International Airport following severe disruption caused by Tuesday’s (16 April) unprecedented rainfall in the UAE. The resultant floods hit road traffic, grounded flights and halted the Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram.

The storms prompted many flights to be delayed or cancelled, with some diverted to other airports. Neighbouring Sharjah International Airport was also badly affected. However both airports are gradually returning to normal. Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi remained fully operational despite the conditions.

UAE media title The National this morning (19 April) quoted Dubai Airports Chief Operating Officer Majed Al Joker saying on Thursday evening (18 April) that services would resume within 24 hours at DXB.

In the latest update, a Dubai Airports spokesperson said at 12.34am today (19 April): “Dubai Airports is endeavouring to do its best to support passengers at Dubai International (DXB) impacted by travel delays due to the recent unprecedented weather conditions the UAE experienced.

“However, due to the ongoing disruption, DXB is temporarily limiting the number of inbound flights until 04:00, 19 April. Departures will continue to operate. DXB is facing a backlog of baggage due to resource constraints. Passengers who reach their final destination without their baggage should contact the airport airline representative or contact their airline call centre.

17 April

The day after the storms (17 April), Dubai Airports underlined the gravity of the situation it faced.

In a statement the company said:  “Due to the unprecedented weather conditions in the UAE, Dubai International is advising passengers not to come to the airport, unless absolutely necessary. Flights continue to be delayed and diverted.”

Earlier in the day, it added: “It’s challenging for departing guests to reach the airport and arrival guests to leave the terminals due to the significant flooding and road blockages, resulting in limited available transport options..

“We’re continuously working hard with our emergency response teams and service partners to restore normal operations as quickly as possible and provide support for guests. Flights are delayed and some diverted with many airlines impacted by displaced crew. Recovery will take some time. Dubai Airports thanks its guests for their patience and understanding while it works through these operational challenges.” ✈
